DIY Fabric Organizer

Posted on by Paula Pellet

Hiya friends!  As I write this I can hear the rain dripping on the roof of the Quality Plastic Pellets craft laboratory like little pellets in a jar.  Rainy days like this inspire me to get my crafting areas organized, and ready for the holiday crafting ahead.  That’s why I wanted to share out my idea this week for a weighted fabric organizer!

FABRIC ORGANIZER

Why should you weight a fabric organizer? It’s sew simple—the weighted pad in the bottom of the organizer keeps your organizer sturdy and in place as you pull out your crafting materials.

Why should you weight a fabric organizer?  It’s sew simple—the weighted pad in the bottom of the organizer keeps your organizer sturdy and in place as you pull out your crafting materials.  It also keeps it upright if you take it on the go in the car!

How can you get one going?  I’ve got a couple of fun options for you.

Circular Fabric Organizer

You’ll only need a few yards of fabric for this fun little how-to!  First, cut two circles of fabric with 12 inch diameters.  Next, grab yourself some Stiff Stuff (this stuff is neat!) and cut another 12 inch circle.  Turn the fabric circles inside out and pin, with the Stiff Stuff between.  Now, stitch it up leaving a 4 inch gap.  Turn inside out and fill with 2 cups of my Quality Plastic Pellets, and then stitch closed.

Next, you’ll need two pieces of fabric and another piece of your Stiff Stuff cut about 38 inches in length and 16 inches in wide.  Cut 4 pieces of fabric 9 inches wide by 12 inches tall.  Hem up one 9 inch side, then stitch these “pockets” about 2 inches up along one side of the longer fabric pieces.  These will be your interior pockets.  Now, turn the longer pieces of fabric inside out, lay the Stiff Stuff on, and stitch them together, leaving enough gap to turn them right side out again.  Stitch shut, then stitch this “side” onto the circular bottom you created earlier, then stitch the seams together on the side and you’re all set!

Square Fabric Organizer

For the square organizer, you’ll need:

Follow the instructions above for stitching success for the main portion of your box.  For the interior dividers, you’ll stitch 2 of the fabric rectangles and a Stiff Stuff rectangle together inside out, then flip and stitch closed.  Repeat this 2 more times to get 3 dividers.  Glue these in place in the interior of your organizer and you’re all set!

I hope you find these fabric organizers handy and fun!  Be sure to post any finished object pictures on my Facebook page and browse my Pinterest board for other great patterns!  If you need Quality Plastic Pellets for this or any other project, just click on the link below.
