October is National Eat Better, Eat Together Month
Mmmhmya—Sorry for the mumbles I was talking with my mouth full, which is appropriate just this once because my blog this week is all about eating! October is National Eat Better, Eat Together Month, and I couldn’t be more excited!
What’s in a name? Let’s start with the eating better. Did you know if your dinner date is the living room television you may actually eat more? Studies have shown that distracted eating, including watching your favorite shows while chomping down, can lead you to
continue eating even after you’re full. Turn off the tube this month and take the time to focus on your food; you may even find it tastes a bit better!
What about the eating together? The significance of this month is to urge families to gather around the table and bring back the family dinner. Eating together gives you precious family time where you can socialize with your family, share stories about the day, and discuss the week ahead. With this busy, busy world we live in we often neglect family meals and lose this wonderful bonding time. Think small for big results this month. Kick off your eating together with a once a week (electronic free) family dinner! Pick a night that works for everyone’s schedules, but don’t be afraid to flex it if needed; the main idea is to make sure it happens!
Love the idea and want to take it a bit further? Pick a night and make it truly a family night by cooking together, too. Cooking is great sensory fun, plus measuring is marvelous math! Everyone should pitch in to get the kitchen clean afterwards, then pop in a movie for more inexpensive family night fun.
Let’s get a great habit started this month and eat better all together! If you have any tips on how you can get everyone at the table, be sure to share them on my Facebook page!
