Why Everyone Should Have a Weighted Blanket

Posted on by Paula Pellet

Weighted blankets are often given to children with autism and people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder because the weight in these blankets helps calm those dealing with hyperactivity and/or anxiety. What most people don’t realize is that weighted blankets can be used by just about anyone for a variety of reasons. I believe everyone should own a weighted blanket!

Trouble Sleeping?

Weighted blankets help your muscles relax

Have you ever been sick, the kind of sick that makes every muscle in your body sore? What about having sore muscles from a hard day at work or an intense workout at the gym? Everyone has had sore muscles at some point in their life.  All of these aches, pains and sore muscles can make it very hard to fall asleep even though your body is extremely exhausted and needs rest. Weighted blankets help your body relax when you are sore or achy from either being sick or just body overload. Resting or sleeping with a weighted blanket will provide your body with deep tissue pressure, which is comparable to a deep tissue massage.

Deep Tissue Pressure

The deep tissue pressure provided by a weighted blanket helps release serotonin throughout the brain. Serotonin is a natural chemical created by your body, which contributes to temperature regulation and feelings of well-being and happiness. The serotonin then turns into another natural chemical within the body called melatonin. Melatonin can also help with temperature regulation and most importantly, it is a natural sleep aid. Producing melatonin can also help individuals who are suffering from insomnia. Not only do these natural chemicals help you fall asleep, but they also help you get a better night’s sleep. This is necessary when the muscles in your body are sore or if you are ill. Sore, achy muscles and fatigue are signs that your body needs to rest and recover. Weighted blankets can help your body relax and fall asleep quicker while assuring your body is getting a good night’s sleep. Everyone deserves a good night sleep!
